Orthopaedic Ambulatory Surgery Center – Metropolis, IL

This design was submitted, awarded, and built as part of a design competition for a new Orthopaedic Ambulatory Surgery Center. The design consists of 3 "Class C" operating rooms, 6 recovery stations, 6 prep / hold rooms with integrated central sterile supply departments, and all additional components required by the state. The building entry features a double height lobby with reception and waiting area. The business office is central to reception, check-in area, exam rooms and nurse station. Careful consideration was taken into providing an efficient circulation path, designing a one-way patient flow to better the experience for patients and staff. The centralized nurse station provides easy access and visibility to patients in the prep and recovery stations. The building was oriented for prime visibility from a major highway intersection while optimizing a passive solar design. The building was oriented at a slight angle along the east-west axis. Glazing with overhang and stone-clad, rectangular piers create reveals that front the south (main) entrance. This optimizes daylighting and thermal mass throughout the year while providing shade for the interior. Services and support spaces flank the north end of the building. Finishes utilized for the surgery center were chosen for their practicality along with their high performance characteristics required by the Department of Public Health. While adhering to stringent requirements for finish selection in surgery center based design, it was important to create a warm and inviting experience for the end-users and staff.
